should I clean the red brown plates of a Friese staartklok in white spirit?

I asked my friend Tjeerd whether I could clean the red brown coloured plates of a Friese staartklok in white spirit which is how I normally clean all clock parts including the plates. My concern was that if the red brown paint is original to the clock, it would probably leave the plates once I left it to soak in white spirit. Tjeerd said: "Indeed, do not put these red brown plates into white spirit. Wash them in lukewarm soapy water and dry them thoroughly afterwards. That will leave the red brown paint on which was put there to protect the plates against rust."
